Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
