Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest particular rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
